India Expands Heron Mk II Fleet as Cyclone Ditwah Brings Fresh Rain Alerts
Chennai Braces for More Rain as Cyclone Ditwah Weakens
Offshore
Even as Cyclone Ditwah loses strength near the Tamil Nadu
coast, Chennai and surrounding districts remain on alert for another spell of
heavy rainfall. Weather authorities warn that the weakened system may still
trigger intense showers, waterlogging, and localized flooding in low-lying
areas. Emergency teams remain deployed across the city as officials urge
residents to remain cautious.
India Accelerates Heron Mk II UAV Procurement Amid
Strategic Push
In a parallel development on the national security front,
India has moved to significantly enhance its unmanned surveillance
capabilities. Under emergency procurement provisions, the Indian armed forces
have placed fresh orders for satellite-linked Heron Mk II Unmanned Aerial
Vehicles, according to senior officials in the Israeli defence industry.
Army and Air Force Expand Existing Fleet
The Indian Army and Air Force, both current operators of the
Heron Mk II platform, have submitted additional orders. The decision reflects a
broader effort to strengthen high-altitude, long-endurance intelligence and
reconnaissance operations, especially following lessons learned during
Operation Sindoor.
Indian Navy Acquires Heron Mk II for the First Time
In a notable upgrade, the Indian Navy is set to induct the
Heron Mk II for the first time. The Navy has long relied on older Israeli
Searcher UAVs for maritime surveillance. Transitioning to the advanced Heron Mk
II—equipped with satellite communication and extended endurance—marks a
strategic step toward improved maritime domain awareness.
With its ability to operate over long ranges and transmit real-time intelligence, the Heron Mk II is expected to significantly bolster surveillance across the country’s land and maritime borders.
