Chennai Braces for More Rain as Cyclone Ditwah Weakens Near Coast
Chennai Faces Continued Rainfall as Cyclone Ditwah
Weakens Near Coast
Heavy rainfall continued to lash several parts of Chennai
and Tiruvallur on Tuesday, with intermittent but intense spells disrupting
daily routines. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) forecast indicated
that moderate to heavy showers would persist across Chennai and its
neighbouring districts until Tuesday afternoon, driven by the weakening
remnants of Cyclone Ditwah.
According to the RMC, the deep depression—once Cyclone
Ditwah—recurved slowly southwestwards at a speed of around 3 kmph before
weakening into a depression. The system currently lies over the West-Central
Bay of Bengal, stretching across the North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and South
Andhra Pradesh coasts. It is positioned approximately 40 km east-southeast of
Chennai, with its closest distance from the Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coastline
estimated at 25 km.
Meteorologists expect the system to continue drifting
southwestwards towards the North Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coast while retaining
its intensity until 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. By midnight, it is likely to weaken
further into a well-marked low-pressure area.
In view of the heavy rainfall alert, district
administrations in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram declared a holiday for
all schools and colleges on December 2, 2025. Chennai District Collector Roshni
Siddharth Jagade confirmed that the closure aims to safeguard students amid the
likelihood of intense rain and potential waterlogging. Similar directives were
issued in Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram as authorities assessed local conditions
and preparedness.
Officials emphasised that the precautionary holiday was necessary given the evolving weather pattern and the possibility of further disruptions. Meanwhile, emergency teams and civic bodies across the affected districts remain on alert as the weakened system approaches the coast.
